LIBRARY

The library collection meets the needs and accommodates the learning styles of individual students by providing for age and interest groups from Nursery to Grade 6, including high-interest/low-vocabulary books. New books are added regularly. The library endeavors to provide materials to support classroom curricula and student projects. The library collection is being developed to include more multi-cultural materials reflecting the diversity of the student population. Students are introduced to stories from different parts of the world and from various racial, religious, and ethnic traditions.

The library curriculum includes an introduction to literature and development of research skills. At the beginning of library class, every age group listens to a reading geared to the theme of the day. From Nursery to Grade 6, the students learn book facts and develop literary vocabulary. Keeping developmental skills in mind, students learn to retell a story, relate it to other stories, predict outcomes, describe characters, and identify the major conflict moving the plot or motivating the characters. Students in Grades 2, 3, and 4 play library games to develop library skills and to demonstrate familiarity with library organization and terminology. Students in Grades 3 through 6 use Internet and print reference material to complete research projects.

The library curriculum seeks to foster a love of literature in all students at Holy Name Parish School.
